What to Expect
The field of grief counseling/therapy has grown significantly in recent years. This is partly due to advances and increases in research that have allowed a better understanding of grief and the different ways it touches people’s lives. Counselors and therapists have an increased awareness of what people experiencing grief from death and non-death losses encounter. It is essential to remember that the most critical intervention for people in grief is to grieve. What grieving people need the most from others is to have their grief acknowledged and witnessed, and be provided the opportunity to be seen and heard by a compassionate listener. While a small percentage (10-15%, depending on the study you read) will require longer-term, more intensive counseling or therapy, the majority do not.
There is no wrong way to grieve, and grief is not comparable; remember, how YOU grieve is right for YOU.
I provide professional grief counseling related to death and non-death losses. My services include loss assessment, psychoeducation, and coping skills related to loss. We will also work together to build a program of self-care, and if, longer-term, more complex therapy needs are identified, referrals to another mental health specialist can be made.
Please note, I am not a licensed mental health provider and am not trained to care for people with complex mental health disorders such as PTSD, chronic, severe depression, schizophrenia, and others. Although I am a licensed prescriber, medications are rarely, if ever, indicated or beneficial for people in grief. I will not prescribe opioids under any conditions, as they have no role in grief counseling.
In general, people experiencing acute bereavement benefit from 4-8 sessions, some more, some less, depending on various factors. During our first session, we will review a potential plan.
I want to let you know that I do not bill insurance, and that payment is due when services are provided. You can make electronic payments via Venmo or directly on my website.
